Argh!!! Okay, so I'm working on a digital painting - decided to pick up where I left off with this
little ditty (gladly, it looks much better now!), but for every step I take forward, I find myself three steps back (cliches are fun!).
Okay, here's the deal - I can't flipping figure out what to do with my brushes. I am just clueless. They never do what I want them to do, so what I wind up doing is painting a huge swath of color and then erasing away what I don't want. Pretty back assward, and mind-numbingly frustrating. And, on the off chance that I find something that works and I save the brush, I flits off never to be found again. What the frak?!
Any tips you might have would be greatly appreciated - what settings do you use for the different stages of your painting? I'm sure I could/should be asking better questions, but right now I have to stamp my foot and walk away in a huff from my computer. Stupid painting not looking how I want it to....@#%&^/!!
By the by, I'd post an update, but it's just taken a turn for the worse and I'm trying to decide whether to go forward, or go back to the previously saved version before I did all the weirdening (yeah, that's a word dagnabit). Seriously, it's creeping me out a little. I think I need to not look at it for a while, lol.

If you happen to be in the states and in need of some art supplies, I highly recommend:
Cheap Joe's Art Stuff.
I found them on the distributor list for Strathmore (my brand of sketchbook). For some reason, they don't process your order until 2 days after you place it, but then you receive your stuff two days after that, and everything is in pristine condition.

Also, what I normally do to avoid messing about with brushes (cuz I'm lazy) is just pick a normal soft-edged one and then take the brush opacity down some. That way you can lightly go over the same line and it gets a little darker each time, "licking" it into shape, which allows a lot more control, especially when painting.

I often pick colors meanwhile using alt and clicking on the color of choice, that makes merging colors pretty easy and fast
and yeah, as kenthayle says, you need pressuresensitivity to be able to draw much easier. Softedged brush (just change the setting of the normal) is even better to blend with, but I like it a little rough
If I need more detailes, I just pick a smaller brush (still using the normal)
you are just truly GREAT!
Just what did I do with that sketchbook and pencil?! Psst, somebody's sketching something for someone who's been waiting eons for her drawing. And, my new scanner will be arriving some time this week, so she will get to see it soon. Maybe...cross your fingers, eyes and toes!
I think the problem with the disappearing brushes is because I still have all the ones CS2 came with. I think mine just might be getting lost in the fray. I saw something the other day that said you should delete them all. But that just seems like throwing the baby out with the bathwater. pfft.
And I've been waiting for years to throw out your drawing
My family gave me a sketchbook with pencils and charcoal, I think they want me to draw more traditional art, I guess I have to obey them soon. But I've basically havent drawn anything in months.
You are SUCH a sweetheart you have no clue! <3
